Architectural Drafting and Design

AI - what you should know

AI can be an incredibly useful tool during the early stages of home design. It can help generate ideas, explore architectural styles, visualize finishes, and even help clients communicate what they like. Used the right way, it can be a great source of inspiration.

The important part is understanding where inspiration ends and actual design begins.

AI-generated images and floor plans can look convincing at first glance, but they may include dimensions that do not work, awkward circulation, impractical room connections, unrealistic structure, stairs that do not meet proper rise, run, headroom, or landing requirements, and building-code issues that are easy to miss.

Another common issue is consistency. A floor plan, exterior image, and interior rendering may all appear to show the same house while actually representing different versions of the design. Window locations may shift, rooms may change size, roof forms may not align, and details shown in one view may disappear in another.

There are also all the things that happen behind the walls. Appliances, cabinetry, plumbing, venting, electrical, framing, and mechanical systems all need real space and coordination. AI may show them visually, but that does not mean they can actually fit or function as shown.

That does not mean AI should be avoided. In fact, it can be very helpful when it is treated as a creative tool rather than a construction document.

Use AI to explore ideas, collect inspiration, communicate style, and help define what you want your home to feel like. Then take those ideas and develop them into accurate, coordinated drawings that consider dimensions, structure, code requirements, systems, and how the home will actually be built.

The goal is not to replace inspiration with technical drawings. It is to use both for what they do best.

AI can help start the conversation. Professional design turns those ideas into something real, coordinated, and buildable.
